Supporting those with an eating disorder and mental health needs

At Sydney's dietetic practice for disordered eating and mental health, your dietitian at Appetite for Change can help you. Eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and avoidant-restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), are devastating conditions that can take over one's life.

With careful nutrition guidance and counselling, you can improve both your physical health and mental wellbeing. You will learn about normal eating practices and how to listen to your appetite and trust it again.

our philosophy

You were born knowing how to listen to your body. We help you remember.

“If you have an appetite for change, learn from your past to help you reach your full potential.”

We are all born with an innate ability to know what our bodies need and want, to recognise our appetite signals and nurture our bodies with the food that we need to be healthy. Far too easily, life’s experiences can interfere with this natural relationship we have with food, and we can forget how to listen to our bodies’ needs. Sometimes we need some help remembering how to do this.

The Appetite for Change Sankofa bird logo

about our logo

The ancient mythological Sankofa bird of West Africa flies forward while looking backward, nurturing an egg (representing the future) in its mouth. Even though the bird is advancing, it periodically makes it a point to examine its past, since this is the only way to have a better future.

Common questions

Do I need a referral?

No, you can book directly. However, a GP referral with an Enhanced Primary Care Plan or an Eating Disorder Management Plan makes you eligible for Medicare rebates, so it is worth asking your GP.

Can I claim Medicare or private health rebates?

Yes. We accept GP referrals under Enhanced Primary Care Plans and Eating Disorder Management Plans for Medicare rebates. Many private health extras policies also cover dietetics — check with your insurer.

Do you offer telehealth?

Yes. Every practitioner offers both in-person appointments at our Crows Nest practice and telehealth sessions Australia-wide.

What happens in the first appointment?

Your initial session runs 60 to 90 minutes. We talk through your history, your relationship with food and your goals, then agree on a plan together. You will never be judged for what or how you eat.

Do you support NDIS participants?

Yes, we have experience supporting patients through the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Contact us to discuss your plan.

Do you prescribe weight-loss diets?

Our focus is on helping you build a healthy, sustainable relationship with food rather than short-term restrictive dieting. You will learn about normal eating practices and how to listen to your appetite and trust it again.
